Sequencing by Ion Technology™

Sequencing on Ion Proton™ and Ion S5XL™ systems is provided by NGI Uppsala (Uppsala Genome Center).

UGC is currently offering sequencing services on Ion Technology™ (Thermo Fisher Scientific) on both ready-to-use, custom designed, and community AmpliSeq panels for both DNA and RNA studies. Examples of ready-to-use AmpliSeq DNA panels are Human Exome, Comprehensive Cancer, Cancer Hot Spot, etc. AmpliSeq Human Transcriptome is used for differential gene expression studies only and is suitable also for FFPE samples). The short turn-around time between sample submission and result make these applications ideal for early stages of experiments and for clinical applications.

Sequencing by Ion TechnologyTM (Thermo Fisher Scientific) is suitable for whole genome re-sequencing (WGS), human exome sequencing, targeted re-sequencing, whole transcriptome sequencing, (on model organisms), small RNA (miRNA) sequencing, metagenomics studies (16S), amplicon sequencing, chromatin-immunoprecipitated (ChiP) sequencing and more.

The following sequencing instruments are available:

  • Ion Proton: Gives ~80 M reads / 10 Gb sequencing data per chip. Read length 200bp.
  • Ion S5XL: operates using three types of chips with different throughput and read length:
    • Chip 520: ~8 M reads / 1 Gb sequencing data per chip. Read length 400bp.
    • Chip 530: ~15-20 M reads / 3-5 Gb sequencing data per chip. Read length 400bp.
    • Chip 540: ~80 M reads / 10 Gb sequencing data per chip. Read length 200 bp.
